Ogliastra is renowned for the beauty of the sea and its beaches, but there is a largely unknown “treasure” found in the inland areas. Lesser known locations and places, but among the most fascinating and evocative of Sardinia, capable of touching the strings of the soul while remaining engraved in the mind. You can visit spectacular waterfalls such as that of “Lequarci” and several caves, thanks to the karst and hypogenic heritage of the area. It is possible to admire various prehistoric testimonies such as the tombs of the giants and the nuraghi, including the imposing “Serbissi” fortress.

During the seasons of the year you can observe the different colors and smell the scents of the mountain, given by the rich biodiversity of flora and botanical endemisms. It is not uncommon while walking along the characteristic paths, between the sheer cliffs and the numerous water sources, to encounter species of the area’s wildlife. Wild boars, deer and birds of prey are frequent sightings.

Wid Ogliastra Excursions offers two types of routes with different lengths of time. You can decide whether to venture into the “Waterfalls” itinerary for a total of 3 and a half hours, or the “Nuraghes” itinerary which lasts approximately 4 and a half hours. Sicuramente, in qualche occasione vi sarete imbattuti in qualcuno che imprecando avrà utilizzato il termine “buginu” o “bocinu”.

Parola utilizzata singolarmente, oppure all’interno di una frase formulata come una maledizione: “a ti cùrrere su buginu”  – che ti corra dietro “su buginu” -, ma anche ” ancu ti pighit su buginu” – che ti prenda “su buginu”.

Addirittura tra le varie imprecazioni, che citano questa figura, ne esiste una particolarmente sadica: “su buginu chi t’irdorighit” – “su buginu” che ti tagli le orecchie -.

A questo punto, abbiamo intuito che si tratta di un personaggio a cui stare alla larga assai temuto dal popolo e di cui è rimasto un alone di reverente timore nei suoi confronti, ma di chi stiamo parlando?

In alcuni paesi della Sardegna, è uno dei tanti termini con cui viene chiamato il diavolo, mentre per la maggior parte indica il boia. Proprio su questo termine ci sono varie teorie e dispute sull’origine del termine.

L’ipotesi più quotata sarebbe che la parola derivi dallo spagnolo antico “bochín” o dal catalano “botxí”, appunto che significa boia – o carnefice -, colui che uccideva per mestiere.

Ma c’è chi farebbe risalire tale termine all’antica Civiltà Babilonese e  precisamente al vocabalo “ugu”, che significa morte. Non manca neanche chi fa afferma che il termine deriverebbe dalla parola latina bùcina, che indicava uno strumento musicale del gruppo degli ottoni dell’epoca romana. Questo veniva utilizzato per varie funzioni, tra cui quella di segnalare un’esecuzione capitale eseguita dal boia.

Invece si tratterebbe di un errore storico, attribuire l’origine del termine “buginu” a Giovanni Battista Lorenzo Bogino, ministro per gli Affari di Sardegna, nel periodo sabaudo, per circa trent’anni a partire dal 1759.

Infatti secondo questa teoria, con l’attuazione di alcune dure misure contro il brigantaggio e l’introduzione delle forche mobili in tutti i centri dell’Isola, la cultura popolare legò il suo nome a quello del boia.

Ma oltre l’etimologia del termine “buginu” a contrastare la tesi che il ministro Bogino, fosse identificato come un boia, sono i documenti e le fonti. Infatti fu un politico illuminato, che apportò importanti innovazioni e riforme in Sardegna. Furono ben altri gli emissari piemontesi inviati dai Savoia, che governarono con la repressione e il sangue l’Isola.
